Since the pandemic struck I’ve stopped going to the office. that means I no longer have to carry a messenger-style bag large enough to hold my MacBook, charger and other work supplies in addition to my camera, spare batteries, lenses, charger, etc. All of which allows me to carry a much smaller lighter bag. At the same time, my X-T4 arrived so now, in my smaller, somewhat lighter, smaller bag I carry the X-T4, usually with the 23mm f2 lens on it, the X-T3 with the longish 55-200 on it for those very occasional long shots, as well as another street lens (18-55mm kit zoom), extra batteries and a couple of other knick-knacks. The point of this overlong gear recitation is that I occasionally take a shot or two with the X-T3 and the long lens, then stuff it back in the bottom of the bag. Last week I decided to see what was on that chip and so, over the next several posts, instead of my usual more or less contemporaneous and sequential shots I’ll be delving back into shots taken at different times and places. You may not be able to tell the difference!

While professional photographers certainly take all kinds of shots, one of the things that distinguishes them from amateurs is a tendency to focus on particular types of photography that they’re really good at (think wedding photographers or architecture, glamor, or catalog) and maybe some other genre that they focus on for their personal projects, whereas a lot of amateurs often are all over the place: a few landscapes, a few flow close-ups a few street shots, etc. – jacks of all trades and masters of none. While I’m an amateur and I don’t like to be stuck in a single genre, I do like to photograph anything I see that looks interesting. Garry Winogrand said that he takes pictures to see what things will look like photographed. That’s kinda my thing…
This was interesting to read b/c I don’t consider you amateur. I was gonna say a photo like this is something I would take because I am all over the place. But it’s what I like. I consider photos that I take a little slice of my life. Garry Winogrand’s quote is great and makes so much sense. Thanks, Adam.
I like these random shots. The street photos you take are fantastic, and sometimes scary to me (the facial expressions!), so I really enjoy seeing these ‘normal’ kind of photos. And I mean that in a good way.
