This started off as a project about insomnia. As men grow older they find it harder to stay asleep in the morning; women, conversely, have a harder time falling asleep in the first place. Insomnia is a lonely place, especially if your partner is asleep and you don’t wish to disturb them.
As the series developed, I realised that in our technologically fragmenting and attention-surveilled, individualistic society, operating in a neo-liberal capitalist economy, that insomniac loneliness said more about the state of our personal relationships – hence the title, Modern Romance.
