While, as a general rule, my personal ethics and aesthetics require me to ask people before I photograph them in public, that really doesn’t work in rush hour in the subway. My camera sits on top of my bag on my lap. I read a magazine. At appropriate moments I snap the shutter, trusting to auto-exposure and auto focus (or, occasionally, zone focusing). Most subjects are unaware they’ve been photographed.
