  1. It’s lucky these laws weren’t in effect when August Sander was working or i wouldn’t have his marvelous 7-volume “People of the 20th Century.”

    1. Thank you very much! Part of the trick is to mostly try and take the picture when the subject is looking at you (or the camera). I find it makes for a much more engaging image, probably because of human cognitive faculties related to face recognition.

      Of course, In this particular image no one is really looking at the camera – so much for rules!

      1. It is so much easier to photograph people in the US – here in Germany people would not like to be photographed on trains. If I did, I would have to ask a written permission in order to publish the photo. Otherwise they would have the right to sue the photographer. To be on the safe side, I mainly photograph foreigners … and my fellow Germans mainly from behind. Unless it’s a public event. The law is quite strict here.
