I never found out exactly what was happening here, either, but there was a massive police presence, with trucks blocking off the street, armored police, machine guns, etc. There was muttering among the bystanders about a hostage situation but nothing that ever made the news or was explained. With typical blasé NY sang froid, people ignored the potential danger, gawked and took cellphone pictures and videos.
