  1. love this one!
How do you do it??!! I often sit in the subway, when my hands start to itch:should I take a pic or not? Do I dare, do I not? I am afraid to offend people. I know that I could simply ask them. But then they start to act differently, in front of the lens , and that exactly what I don’t want.

    1. I’ve written about this a lot, here and on the Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/NYPPL). My general belief is that one should ask people if they’re willing to be photographed – this is both for ethical reasons as well as artistic ones. While something is lost when your subject knows they’re being photographed, I believe more is gained when there’s a human connection made.

However, having said that, the subway is a difficult environment to approach people and I seldom do ask in the subway. I have perfected a technique of appearing to be reading a magazine held atop my camera, resting on the bag on my lap. I shoot with a small, quiet camera, I shoot wide with the AF assist lamp turned off and rear LCD off. These images are journalistically “truer” but I think they would be better still if the subjects had consented.
