Bicycle at Red Corner

Varick and Downing Streets, New York

I went to see a documentary about the photographer Gregory Crewdson, “Brief Encounters,” the other night at the Film Forum and spent the rest of the evening taking Crewdson-inspired night shots, hand-held at high ISOs around Greenwich Village with my NEX-7. No million dollar sound-stages and 8×10 view cameras for me. A few more to follow over the next day or so.

  1. Yes – and what I never realized is the scale of his conceptions. Massive crew, everything in the image exactly as he wants it, set designers, smoke truck, etc. etc. Every detail has been composed by him (and his team), unlike my chance snapshots.

    1. Thanks! Yes, I know the Hopper piece as well and I see what you mean, but this was right after I came out of the cinema and walked around the corner, so I was definitely thinking Crewdson. You should look him up on line – his work is striking.
