It was Meursault, the alienated persona of Camus’ L’Etranger, I think, who remarked on the resemblance that dogs and their human partners come to exhibit after a long time living together. Of course, there’s probably nothing to this, factually, but see if it doesn’t come to mind in the fleeting portrait this traditional knife sharpener allowed me to take in his truck the other day.
