Urban Exoticism

Downing & Varick St

I recently entered a competition on “Urban Exoticism.” From my archive I found 76 images I considered candidates, but only 5 could be submitted. Over the next few days I’ll share some of those that didn’t make the cut.

    1. Thanks! Yes, you have to pay close attention to the description of what’s wanted and take a look at the judges’ own work to try and understand their sensibility. Much as I liked these, they weren’t right.

      1. Oh, I get that.
I entered some of my cat photos in a newspaper contest recently. I had to read through to see exactly what they were looking for to narrow down my selections.
Surprisingly, adherence to the rules counts for 50%. Sharpness of photo only 10%. Is that unusual?

        1. Well, I’m usually applying to more arty type contests where the specs are rather less specific and sharpness is presumed to be an artistic choice. The instructions that must be followed tend to be around pixels and format and percentages aren’t given for different attributes – you’re just trying to catch the (subjective) eye of the judges.

        2. Thanks for this, Adam. Yes, my contest is definitely not ‘arty’–more cutey than anything. Unlimited submissions so I have narrowed it down to 5 selections of my cats.
