Developers are putting up hideous new skyscrapers along the South end of the park, supported to a great extent, by anonymous foreigners who are laundering, or otherwise caching money in NY real estate. These shadow-throwing structures often remain unoccupied and are owned by the innermost company of a series of shell companies. May they fade away as they appear to here.
Sadly, a blight I am afraid affecting many international cities – London definitely suffers.
Ah, yes. To think St Paul’s must now compete with the Gherkin…!

So what is the purpose of the buildings? Seems like such an incredible waste of money that could be used for so much more.
Developers make money building them and selling them, dodgy Russian oligarchs get to launder money; wealthy Chinese investors get a bolt hole for times of trouble, etc. etc. Only NYers get nothing out of the deal except shadows across the park.
