This morning’s street photo was taken on the corner of 86th Street and Third Avenue in New York, outside the Baskin-Robbins ice cream store where I worked as a teenager so this would be circa 1973. This is back when Yorkville was still a relatively sleepy German community (with lots of Irish bars) and you can see the Berlin Bar in the background. There’s lots going on in this shot.
Here’s a rare color shot (for me – developing color in a bathroom darkroom is not for the faint-hearted) from the 1970s, taken on Central Park South near Fifth Avenue – that’s the awning of the Plaza Hotel in the background.
There’s a little arcade that traverses 85th to 86th Street, midway between Lexington and Third Avenues. At some point in my early teens I would stand a little ways in, training my camera on the passersby on 86th Street. When one of them happened to glance in to the arcade I snapped a picture. Here is one such.
Here are a couple of images I shot sometime between 1976 and 1980 and I don’t think I’ve posted before. I love the contrast of the beer-drinker and the chauffeur-drive Rolls Royce (and, in the first shot, the VW Beetle as well).
