Church and Castles

Past St Anthony Head we came to St Anthony’s Church and walked on from there into Emma’s Wood where we were able to see across the water to Pendennis Castle and St Mawes Castle. The (possibly apocryphal) story is that St Mawes was built because the cannon at Pendennis could only reach 1½ miles, but in the 3 years it took to build St Mawes, the reach of the cannon extended to 3 miles so the 2nd castle wasn’t actually needed by the time it was ready. Sampford Spiney

I often post here hotel room views. In this case we stayed in an amazing Airbnb: “The Old National School is a Grade II listed house, nestled in the beautiful hamlet of Sampford Spiney, located within Dartmoor National Park. Dating from 1585, the house sits in an idyllic spot between the Church and picturesque Sampford Manor. Originally the Church hall, it became the parish school in 1887 until 1923. It was only in the 1960’s that it became a residential dwelling. With its varied history, the house is quirky, with its lovely spacious rooms hinting at its eclectic history.” I didn’t photograph all of it, but here are a few snaps to give you some ideas. Lyme Regis – Architecture and Shape

That same evening (as the last 3 posts, May 15th) we walked down a steep hill from our AirBnB into the town for dinner and I snapped a few shots of buildings where the contrasty lines and shapes struck me. Click any image to see them all enlarged to full size.

Staircase and Skylight

Somerset House, London

Last year we didn’t quite make it to London Photo. It was our last day in London so we would only have had about an hour and the tickets were quite dear. This year, the school procured tickets for us and I think I saw almost everything, including the architecture.

Greyfriars

Next we walked down Church Ln to Stour St. Christopher (Kit) Marlowe was born in Canterbury (for an excellent historical novel, read Anthony Burgess’s A Dead Man in Deptford), passing through Beer Cart Ln by the Marlowe Kit to Greyfriars Gardens. Passing through the gardens we came out into St Peter’s Grove, a street that looks like all those English ’60s movies. Click any of the pictures to enlarge them all.

Turner Contemporary

Billed as the largest art space outside London, The Turner Contemporary (named for JMW Turner, the English landscape painter) was somewhat disappointing from the point of view of how much art there was to see. Here I’ve shown images that are mostly more about the space and the light than the exhibits. Click any image to see them all enlarged.
