One of many we saw. You may be surprised to learn about the history and purposes of totem poles.

Michael Chabon wrote a fantastic novel, The Yiddish Policemen’s Union, which imagines a Jewish protectorate in Sitka, Alaska (well worth reading, BTW). Upon debarking at Sitka and heading for a bus into town, we came upon this sign, displaying the type of Yiddish humor I’d expect from his characters.

Here we are finally approaching the spot where we’ll be able to see where the glacier comes down to meet the water. 





As many of you will have sussed by now, I did my first (and dare I say, last) ocean cruise a few weeks ago and have been regaling (or boring) you with my vacation snaps. As a life-long urbanite, with my lens normally focused on the minutiae of gritty human artifice on NY’s Upper West Side this is quite a departure for me. I hope you’ll excuse this touristy excursion into Nature’s beauty.
