Broadway Friend

I asked the people working at the vegetable store for a picture but they were not terribly willing. However, this neighborhood man, who evidently liked hanging around and talking to them was willing. He was very friendly but didn’t tell me very much about his relationship to the place. From February, 2005

Broadway Hallelujah!

This man used to walk up and down Broadway, between about 96th and 106th Street, shouting, “Hallelujah, Hallelujah…” over and over again or, sometimes, “Jesus loves you, Jesus loves you,” without cease. I have not seen him in a while, but this picture was taken in July, 2004.
Broadway Transit Worker

Another of the earlier pictures in my series, The Burghers of Broadway, currently appearing on the NYPL (New York People Live) Facebook page. This one is from July, 2004.
Broadway Movement

I’m traveling this week and away from Lightroom. So we’ll delve back into the archives for more from The Burghers of Broadway, currently appearing on NYPL. I believe this woman was an adherent of Falun Gong (though it might have been Tai Chi). Unfortunately, this is from my early digital days (2004) and all that remains is an over-processed, low-res jpeg.

Broadway Buddhists (or the Tao of Tattoo)

This is one of my favorite images from The Burghers of Broadway series. It was shot in September of 2006. There was some sort of Buddhist event at the Symphony Space, across the street. Crossing the median I encountered this pair and asked if I could take a picture. The monk on the left seemed largely unaware of, or uninterested in, me or my question. But the tattooed man on the right explained what I was asking and, receiving what I thought was a fairly non-committal response, posed. It was clear he felt greatly honored to have his picture taken in the monk’s company and I suspect he must be a revered monk of some renown.
