Rust Bucket

Went walking, looking for a Halal cart for a Falafel dinner a little too late in the day for most of them. Finally found one at 79th St and Broadway but also these…

It was Meursault, the alienated persona of Camus’ L’Etranger, I think, who remarked on the resemblance that dogs and their human partners come to exhibit after a long time living together. Of course, there’s probably nothing to this, factually, but see if it doesn’t come to mind in the fleeting portrait this traditional knife sharpener allowed me to take in his truck the other day.

Another of the earlier pictures in my series, The Burghers of Broadway, currently appearing on the NYPL (New York People Live) Facebook page. This one is from July, 2004.

I was initially struck by the quality of the light filtering through the fiberglass skylight of the truck and started photographing the back storage area. But then this workman was very pleased that I was photographing his truck and agreed to be photographed with his truck. This is the pose he struck, unbidden.
