The Message of Abbey Road

A painter was working on a medium sized canvas off to the left, with the pier columns prominent in the painting, forcing me to look again as we walked past the pier and notice, once more, how photographable it is in every different light.

Seen on Christmas Day, when the bold go for a dip.

The small white sign reads, “Hahahaha Yes we know. It’s the Right way around inside. ‘Merry Christmas.'”

A must see in Brighton is the starling murmurations, occurring at dusk between about November and February. We photographed them in mid-December (and may go back this month as their numbers increase with incoming Scandinavian birds).

Christmas lights have been up for at least a month in Brighton. This message didn’t seem to strike the note one might have expected.

Jumping in the English Channel on Christmas day is a thing here in Brighton. Today the temperature was hovering a little above 0°C (mid 30s °F) with a windchill about 6° (10°F) lower. We joined the Brighton Ramblers for a walk from the Brighton Palace Pier to the Hove Lagoon and the place was packed. Below, just some of the sights we saw (click into the gallery to see explanatory captions).

Although we had timed tickets for a Monday morning, upon entering the Lee Miller exhibition we were met by a scrum just to get close enough to read the introductory text. This continued, annoyingly, throughout the otherwise excellent and well curated exhibition, breaking Miller’s career into 11 phases. As we wanted to see it all, it took 2½ hours, patiently waiting for other viewers to move on before we could stand, briefly, in front of each image.

Maybe the British aren’t familiar with Trayvon Martin and how his murder was justified on the basis of Florida’s “stand your ground” law. But to American eyes this is either in very poor taste, or a call for Black retribution. What was Timberland thinking?
