Haunted Houses

Another noisy night shot. The green glow in the background is the 50-story Citibank building about a block from where I was standing. Once again, I opened up the shadows and exaggerated the digital noise to get the micro-pointillist effect. I rather like it.

Foggy, Foggy Night

This is the first of many shots you’ll be seeing, taken with my old Nikon D300 while my current main camera, the Fuji X-T1, is in the shop. It was an incredibly foggy night and I forgot that I had the camera set to Shutter Priority mode at 1/320th of a second. While this eliminated blur from camera shake, it forced the auto-ISO up to 3200. And, while I remember being thrilled with the high ISO performance of this 12 megapixel beast when I upgraded from a 6-MP DSLR, it’s remarkable how noisy it looks compared to what you get out of an X-Trans sensor. Still, I rather like the somewhat pointillist effect and instead of applying noise reduction I amped the clarity and the sharpness to exaggerate the noise. More foggy night shots to come…

I went down to cover this protest outside the Citibank building in Long Island City, first to discover they were, incongruously, protesting NATO and the G8; next to discover it was a film and not a demo at all.
