Madam Secretary

Seemed appropriate for the day after Election Day, with ballots still being counted. Then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was on a flight I took to LaGuardia. I caught this snap after landing as she and her escorts were hurrying to their waiting limos. After giving permission, she asked who I was with [which newspaper] and I explained I was freelance and she was my 4th Secretary of State. She asked who else I had and I told her Elliot Richardson, Cyrus Vance and John Kerry. “All good men,” she assured me before dashing off. As you can see, I didn’t manage a high enough shutter speed to prevent some blur.

Welcome Back to NY

We returned to NY about 2 weeks ago, in the midst of the Covid-19 crisis. There were 13 people on our flight and the airports at both ends were empty and destitute.

New York Fog

Low Visibility
Leaving the pea-soup fogs of Ireland, I returned to the same in a New York taking a one-day break from sub-freezing temperatures blanketed in deep fog and rain.

Foggy, Foggy Night

This is the first of many shots you’ll be seeing, taken with my old Nikon D300 while my current main camera, the Fuji X-T1, is in the shop. It was an incredibly foggy night and I forgot that I had the camera set to Shutter Priority mode at 1/320th of a second. While this eliminated blur from camera shake, it forced the auto-ISO up to 3200. And, while I remember being thrilled with the high ISO performance of this 12 megapixel beast when I upgraded from a 6-MP DSLR, it’s remarkable how noisy it looks compared to what you get out of an X-Trans sensor. Still, I rather like the somewhat pointillist effect and instead of applying noise reduction I amped the clarity and the sharpness to exaggerate the noise. More foggy night shots to come…
