As part of my project on the gentrification of my old neighborhood (upper Yorkville and lower East Harlem) I was visiting sites from my childhood. I didn’t remember this structure and asked some men who were hanging out near here on a bench about it. They told me it was one of a handful of backup generators that had been installed since Hurricane Sandy for the surrounding public housing apartment complex.

Who says New York is all high-rise apartment blocks?

Bas reliefs on either side of the door of what looks like a luxury apartment building that must have been renovated in an old stable or carriage house.

I’ve probably posted pictures of this new wing of the American Museum of Natural History before. It actually opened while I was living abroad and I haven’t been in yet. Is it just me, or does every new museum building have a requirement to emulate Frank Gehry’s Bilbao swoopy, rounded look?

I had a cousin who was an optician. He offered me an after-school job at his shop. He told me he’d teach me how to work the lens-grinding machine but to be careful lest I fall in and make a spectacle of myself.

I recently entered a competition on “Urban Exoticism.” From my archive I found 76 images I considered candidates, but only 5 could be submitted. Over the next few days I’ll share some of those that didn’t make the cut.

A panorama of he Bay from the walk mentioned in yesterday’s post and a picture (below) of the Norwegian Church Arts Centre at the bay.

The triangle juts out from the corners of Principality (formerly Millennium) Stadium. A couple of other contrasty Cardiff street views I converted to black and white below.

The domed roof over the entrance rotunda of the National Museum + a couple of other architectural images. The “Keep Left” one might go with my “keep right” one from the Metropolitan in NY, or it might be a recommendation to the recently elected Labour party here in the UK who have tried so relentlessly not to frighten anyone with their leftism.

We walked into the city centre and gawked like tourists (see below).
