Designed as a Second System fortification for the harbor defense of Portland, Maine. It was built under the direction of Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn who was the son of the Secretary of War. Dearborn also oversaw the construction of nearby Fort Preble. Read more…

20150804-_DSF1670 — Spring Point Ledge, Casco Bay, Maine

Standing adjacent to the Old Fort Prebble, Spring Point Ledge is still an active and important navigation beacon. Built in 1897 with a fifth-order lens, it initially stood 300 yards offshore. In 1950 is was moved to the end of a man-made breakwater.
