Seaside Reflections

Brighton, UK

About 2½ weeks ago we returned to the UK, this time to Brighton. As democracy and civil rights in the US come more and more frighteningly under threat; and the current administration move us determinedly into a post-bellum isolationism, failing to understand the reasons for which the post-war institutional structures were built, or the impoverishment earlier civilisations endured when they turned inward, we thought it best to consider alternatives. Here we are, reflected in a shiny mirrored surface on the beach promenade on our first afternoon.

Bread & Salt

Bread & Salt, Barrio Logan, San Diego

Whilst in Barrio Logan we visited Bread & Salt, “a 45,000 square-foot gallery and experimental center for the arts with strong community ties,” and I naturally found a variety of aspects of the space to photograph.

Good luck with that!

Presidio Park, San Diego

We went up to Presidio Park and visited the Junipero Serra Museum (the Spanish Missionary who planted a cross here, declaring the lands in the name of Christ). Afterwards we walked around the Park and eventually descended the hill to Old Town.

Mack’s

East 96th Street, New York

This modern luxury high-rise apartment block stands next door to an apartment building where I lived as a boy, on the site of a former one-storey auto-body repair shop known as Mack’s because the Black man who owned and operated it was called Mack. Unknown to us at the time, he was Carl C McNair, father of “Ronald Erwin McNair (October 21, 1950 – January 28, 1986)… an American NASA astronaut and physicist [who] died at the age of 35 during the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger.”
